Biography of Miriam Y. Holden
Miriam Holden was born Miriam Young in Boston in 1893. She graduated from Miss Mary's School and attended Simmons College. After marrying Arthur Holden, she moved to New York, where she and her husband had three children. She was active in such diverse organizations as the Junior League, the Urban League, family-planning groups, and settlement-house work. She was on the advisory boards of the Women's Archives at Radcliffe College and the friends of the Columbia University Libraries, and co-authored The American Woman in Colonial and Revolutionary Times, 1565-1800. She died in 1977.
Description
Contains personal papers of Holden, including lectures, speeches, articles and correspondence, reflecting the views of American feminists during the post-19th Amendment, pre- Feminine Mystique era, especially the early efforts to pass an equal rights Amendment. However, a large portion of the collection consists of Holden's subject files about women, and the collection contains records of the National Woman's Party, with bound volumes of correspondence, pamphlets, Equal Rights, and a detailed record of the 1947 schism within the party. There are also records of the World Center for Women's Archives, including an extensive correspondence (1936-1963) with Mary Beard.
Holden's collection of original 19th-century correspondence by women, such as Susan B. Anthony, Mary Baker Eddy, Belva Lockwood, Mercy Warren, and Victoria Woodhull, is included as are two slave documents, a scrapbook, and a commonplace book. In addition, the collection contains papers of other persons, such as an unpublished manuscript by Eugenie Andruss Leonard, the notes and papers of Elsa Butler Grove, and 34 radio scripts (copies) for the 1939-40 series "The Gallant American Woman," written by Jane Asham.
