Abstract:
The scrapbooks of David Aiken Reed (1880-1953) consists primarily of clippings illustrating the political career of Pennsylvania Senator Reed (Class of 1900) during the years 1914-1940 with a few photographs of World War I campaigns, correspondence from President Herbert Hoover, the publisher Henry Luce and General John J. Pershing, Head of the American Expeditionary Forces of World War I, two letters of commendation, a testimonial, three army documents, and printed copies of a few speeches by Senator Reed.

Biography of David Aiken Reed

David Aiken Reed, lawyer and United States Senator from Pennsylvania, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on December 21, 1880, the son of James H. and Kate J. (Aiken) Reed.

After attending Shadyside Academy, Pittsburgh in 1896, he graduated with an A.B.from Princeton University in 1900 and an LL.B in 1903 from the University of Pittsburgh. Married Adele Wilcox on November 12m 1902 (died June 8, 1948) and then Edna French on December 15, 1948. Two children: David Aiken Reed Jr. (Princeton Class of 1927) and Rosamond Reed (wife if Charles Denby, Class of 1922).

Major Reed served overseas in World War I with the 311th Field Artillery participating in the Meuse-Argonne and Verdun offensives. He served as Acting Chief of Staff of the United Section of Inter-Allied Armistice Commission and American representative on Allied Economic Commission. Was Lieutenant-Colonel, Field Artillery Reserve, 1919-22.

He was a member of the Law Firm, Reed Smith, Shaw and McClay of Pittsburgh. He became Chairman of the Pennsylvania's first Workmen's Compensation Bill, 1912-13, United States Senator from Pennsylvania, 1922-35 (Chairman of the Senate Committee on Military Affairs, member of Finance, Foreign Affair and Immigration Committees. Served as United States delegate to the London Naval Conference of 1930. He was a Trustee and received a Honorary LL.D. degree from Princeton in 1925. Senator Reed expired on February 10, 1953.

Description

Consists of scrapbooks of primarily newspaper clippings, but also photographs, correspondence, and copies of speeches, documenting the career of Reed (Princeton Class of 1900) between 1914 and 1940. Clippings also document, among other subjects, World War I, the 1932 Bonus March, the 1936 Johnstown, Pennsylvania, flood, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Notable correspondents include Herbert Hoover, Henry Luce, and General John J. Pershing. Some Hoover correspondence and clippings relate to Reed’s participation in the London Naval Conference of 1930 as the U.S delegate.

    Volume I: (1914-1925) contain newspaper clippings, correspondence, telegrams and photographs relating to World War I as well as the early career of Senator Reed.

    Volume II: (1919-1939) contains newspaper clippings, printed copies of speeches, correspondence including a letter from President Herbert Hoover dated October 17, 1934 regarding his senatorial campaign.

    Volume III (1925-1932) contain newspaper clippings, photographs relating to Senator Reed's honorary degrees and his representation as a delegate to the Naval Conference of 1930 (including a note relating to the “original Reed-Matsudaira Agreement”).

    There is correspondence from President Herbert Hoover 1930 relating to the above mentioned Naval Conference in London, a TIME magazine cover with a portrait of Senator David Aiken Reed.

    Volume IV: (1932-33) contains newspaper clippings mainly concerning Senator Reed's political beliefs.

    Volume V: (1932) contains newspaper clippings primarily concerning the BONUS MARCH OF JUNE 1932 and other senatorial projects.

    Volume VI: (1934-1936) contains newspaper clippings regarding the Supreme Court fight, the Johnstown, Pennsylvania flood of 1936 and correspondence from General John J. Pershing dated November 25, 1934 regarding the growth of the National Debt and increases in taxes.

    Volume VII (1937-38) includes newspaper clippings relating to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Bethlehem Steel strike, flooding of the Ohio river from Pittsburgh to Cairo, Illinois, January 1937, and correspondence from the son of J. Ramsey MacDonald of Great Britain announcing the death of his father.
