History of Princeton Alumni Publications, Inc.

The February 22, 1900 issue of the Alumni Princetonian announced that a new publication, the Princeton Alumni Weekly (PAW), to be published by the Princeton Printing Company, was to serve as the publication for alumni of the University. First published on April 7, 1900, the PAW has served to keep alumni in touch with the development of the University, the University in touch with the sentiments of alumni, and the alumni in touch with one another.

This series, consisting mostly of correspondence, represents the working files of the various editors of the publication. The following is a list of editors:

Description

The material consists of correspondence, largely related to university and alumni affairs, manuscripts submitted for publication and some subject files. The principal subjects covered by the correspondence include events in the lives of individual alumni, information on various classes and regional alumni groups, comments on university events and architecture (including architects and contractors), presidential administrations, eating clubs and athletics.

Contents List

  1. Subseries 1: Edwin Mark Norris Records, (1895-1925)

    Subseries Description

Edwin Mark Norris, Class of 1895, was the second editor of the PAW, his tenure lasting from 1905 to 1924. Previous to this position he had been the personal assistant to Dean West of the Graduate School where he worked for the Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee from 1895-97. In 1897 he earned an A.M. from Princeton and became a reporter for the Philadelphia Press until 1900 when he became associate editor of the PAW for four years. In 1904 he took over editorship of the magazine until 1924. Edwin Norris, also known as Teddy, died in 1925.

The Norris records are organized into three sub-subseries, Subject Files, arranged alphabetically; Manuscripts, arranged alphabetically by title; and Correspondence, arranged chronologically and then by name. Within a given folder, the correspondence is not strictly alphabetical. The correspondence includes a number of years for which the bulk of the files seem to have been lost. Principal events covered by the Norris subseries include the controveries surrounding Woodrow Wilson's tenure as university president (the Graduate College and the Quad Plan), Woodrow Wilson's political career, alumni participation in World War I, Princeton architecture and athletics. The papers also document the rising importance of alumni in reshaping the nature of the university in the early part of the century and the role of the alumni magazine in linking alumni to the university. Important correspondents include V. Lansing Collins, Whitney Darrow, John Grier Hibben, Walter E. Hope, Andrew C. Imbrie, H. G. Murray, Moses Taylor Pyne, H. Alexander Smith, Norman Thomas, Henry Burling Thompson, Henry P. Van Dusen, John Wanamaker, and Alexander Fleming West and Woodrow Wilson.

  66. Subseries 2: Asa S. Bushnell Records, (1927-1929)

    Subseries Description

Asa Bushnell, Class of 1921, was the fourth editor of the Princeton Alumni Weekly. Before this period of time he worked in the banking industry, first as a teller and then, in 1924 as a director of a bank in Springfield, Ohio. There was also a brief period where he was associated with a printing company. Bushnell took over editorship of the magazine in 1926 and held the post for five years. From 1932-1937 he was also editor of the Princeton Athletic News (1932-1937) and graduate manager of the Princeton Athletic Association (1942-44).

Asa Bushnell is more widely known for forming the Eastern College Athletic Conference, where he became known as a man credited with putting athletic administration on a par with efficient management. From 1945-65 he served as secretary of the U.S. Olympic Committee and as its director from 1965-70. He also edited five widely prized U.S. Olympic books. He died March 22, 1970 at the age of 75.

The records of Asa Bushnell consist of correspondence for the 1927-1929 period which is arranged alphabetically. The nature of the correspondence is similar to that of Norris and includes many of the same correspondents listed earlier. In addition, there is correspondence of F. Scott Fitzgerald and David Lawrence.
