Biography of Maurice Hewlett

Maurice Hewlett was an English poet and historical novelist. A lawyer by training, Hewlett gave up the practice of law in 1898, following the success of his novel, Forest Lovers.

Description

The collection consists of 68 autograph letters by Hewlett to his fellow poet Sir Henry Newbolt spanning the years 1903 or 1904 to 1921, though 31 of the letters are undated. The letters discuss a variety of literary matters and people, and many concern Hewlett's work for the Royal Society of Literature. Also present are two letters (1928) by Hewlett's sister, E. J. Hewlett, to Newbolt, and a printed list marked "Strickly private and confidential" and titled "List of Nominations for the Academic Committee of the Royal Society of Literature."
